Pichanan Thiengtham, an art teacher, was in the teachers' lounge when the shooting began. She recounted that she initially heard many loud noises, believing it to be firecrackers or a bang. 'The shots lasted for a long time without stopping,' she said, only realizing the situation's severity after witnessing injuries among students.
Teachers and students were forced into hiding while emergency workers rushed to provide aid. Pichanan helped transfer injured individuals to the school clinic before assisting with evacuating children to safety in the school building.
Details of the Attack
The prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, stated that the suspect was 'under stress' and had planned the attack. He informed reporters that the shooter had killed his grandparents at home before going to Debsirin School. The 14-year-old used a handgun belonging to his grandfather and fired 26 rounds, with an additional 34 rounds found at the scene.
According to officials, eight individuals lost their lives: three teachers and five students. Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith spoke of the scene's chaos, describing the discovery of a deceased teacher on an upper floor and another injured with chest wounds in another room. The suspect was found dead after shooting himself.
Response from Authorities
The Thai government is taking the incident seriously. The prime minister pledged to discuss gun control measures with the police chief. As of 1:30pm local time, 22 people were injured, with nine in critical condition. Mental health crisis teams are providing support to the affected community.
Background and Reactions
The shooting occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, one of several secondary schools founded by Thailand's royal family. In 2025, it had an enrolment of about 3,100 students and 147 teachers.
Witnesses described the shooter as a troubled youth who was interested in guns and often bullied by other students. The school's leader expressed concern for the safety of educational institutions and called for systemic changes to prevent future incidents.
