A recent analysis of accidents in England and Wales has revealed that electric scooter riders are three times more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries than motorcyclists. The study, conducted by Dr. David Bodansky from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, examined data from 18 cities between 2020 and 2022.

According to the findings, e-scooter riders not only face a higher risk of traumatic brain injuries but also experience more severe internal organ and blood vessel damage compared to motorcyclists or pedal cyclists. Brain injuries accounted for over a third of adult injuries involving e-scooters.

Risk Factors Among Different Demographics

The study highlights that women are disproportionately affected by these injuries. They were involved in more collisions than men and were twice as likely to report severe injuries. Children also face significant risks, with a notable number of e-scooter-related injuries occurring among those under 18 years old.

Design Flaws Contributing to Higher Injuries

The analysis suggests that design flaws in electric scooters contribute to the higher risk of injury. For instance, small wheels make it easier for riders to encounter obstacles such as potholes or kerbs, leading to falls and head injuries. Additionally, the handlebars are typically set at a height more suitable for men, which can result in more chest injuries among female riders.

Dr. Bodansky points out that less than 6% of e-scooter riders use helmets, despite their critical role in preventing traumatic brain injuries. The government has supported trials of rental e-scooters since 2020, but the growing number of privately owned scooters has led to safety concerns.

"The data clearly show that there is an urgent need for better regulation and education regarding the use of e-scooters," said Dr. Bodansky. "Safety training, mandatory helmet use, and clearer road usage guidelines are essential steps in mitigating these risks."

Dr. Petya Ventsislavova from Nottingham Trent University echoes this sentiment. Her 2024 study found that over half of e-scooter riders used pavements and often rode with another person, while men were more likely to use their phones or run red lights.

A Department for Transport spokesperson stated, "These findings are concerning, and our thoughts are with anyone who has been injured on the roads. Road safety is a top priority, which is why we are testing e-scooter use in controlled environments before updating the law to ensure they can be used safely more widely."

Legislation should clarify where and how e-scooters can be used while including mandatory training and helmet requirements. Unlike cars or motorcycles, e-scooters were introduced without such safeguards despite being motorized vehicles.
