Paul Pelosi Faces Hit-Run Charge Following July Crash

Paul Pelosi, the husband of US congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, is facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge after he allegedly crashed into a parked vehicle and left the scene in early July, according to an announcement by the Napa County District Attorney's office. The incident occurred on July 3rd in Yountville, California. No passengers were in the struck car, authorities said, but the vehicle was left with “major” damage. A spokesperson for the Pelosi family told several outlets that Paul apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assumed responsibility for the damages.Pelosi, 86, has also been charged with an infraction related to making an unlawful turn in connection with the 3rd of July incident. His arraignment is scheduled for August 14th. A representative for Pelosi could not be immediately reached for comment.

A History of Traffic Offenses

Pelosi has run afoul of the law while driving in the past, according to public records. He has traffic infractions in California stretching back at least to 2011, including citations for failing to stop at a red light, a stop sign violation and driving on double yellow lines. In 2022, Pelosi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges after another crash in Napa County. California Highway Patrol officers noted his slurred speech and the strong odor of alcohol; he was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation.

Legal Considerations

The Napa County District Attorney's office stated that no evidence has been presented indicating Pelosi was impaired during the hit-and-run incident, hence he is not being charged with DUI. The office cited an ethical obligation to file charges based on available evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. “The district attorney’s office has an ethical obligation to file only those charges that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt based on the available evidence,” read the statement.Body camera footage from the alleged incident will not be released to the public until after the case concludes, in order to protect Pelosi's right to a fair trial. The DA’s office made this decision to ensure that any potential legal proceedings are conducted fairly and transparently.
