Widespread Disruptions in Tunbridge Wells

Residents and businesses in the Tunbridge Wells area are currently experiencing significant disruptions to their water supply, with thousands of properties affected. South East Water reported that about 7,000 homes and establishments could face issues such as low pressure, intermittent supply, or even a complete lack of water due to an ‘instrument failure’ at a nearby treatment works.

Company’s Response and Apologies

Steve Benton, the SEW incident manager, apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused. He stated that while storage tank levels are improving, there is still a need to ensure a stable, continuous flow of water once supplies return. ‘We are on target to see water supplies return later this evening at the earliest,’ Mr. Benton said, emphasizing their commitment to restoring normal service.

Support Measures and Future Concerns

To aid affected customers, bottled water stations have been set up in key locations including Tesco Pembury Road store and Tunbridge Wells Rugby Football Club’s St Mark’s recreation ground. Tankers are also being used to increase drinking water storage levels, particularly for areas most impacted. Additionally, South East Water is providing bottled water to those on its priority services register.

Financial Struggles Highlighted

The company faces significant financial challenges that have contributed to this disruption. In a recent statement, it was revealed that South East Water had faced substantial fines and had just lost its chief executive due to poor performance. The firm needs fresh financing to remain operational, with discussions ongoing for new loan agreements.

These measures aim to address the immediate concerns of residents while also tackling long-term financial uncertainties. The company's ability to continue operations beyond July 2027 remains a critical issue that requires prompt resolution.
