Philipsen’s Victory and Team Success
Jasper Philipsen, riding for Alpecin-Premier Tech, secured his first Tour de France stage win of the year on Wednesday. The Belgian cyclist was able to capitalize on a strong lead-out from teammate Mathieu van der Poel, leading him to victory over Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij in a reduced sprint finish.
Philipsen, known for his form in past Tours, expressed gratitude towards his team during the post-race interview. 'I had to wait until stage 17 to win,' Philipsen said. 'It’s one for the team who kept believing in me. I wasn’t myself early in the Tour; this one is for them.' The victory came after a challenging start, with Philipsen stating he felt the abuse on social media was hard to process.
Yates’ Illness and Team Dynamics
Despite the team’s success, there were concerns about Adam Yates, a key member of UAE Emirates. Yates struggled with a stomach bug during the stage, finishing 26 minutes behind Philipsen. The issue started yesterday afternoon but Yates claims he had a good night's sleep. While Isaac Del Toro and other teammates are fine, this is still a worry for his team.
Team director Matxin Fernández reassured that no other riders on the UAE Emirates team face similar health issues. Nonetheless, Yates' performance has raised questions about the overall well-being of the team as they continue in the race.
Stage Outcome and Green Jersey Race
The stage concluded with several key results. Jasper Philipsen secured the victory with a time of 3 hours 41 minutes 13 seconds, closely followed by Schmid and Kooij. In the green jersey race, Philipsen narrowed the gap to Mads Pedersen, now just seven points behind.
With Stuyven’s performance and tactics being praised, the final stretch saw a thrilling finish as Van der Poel led out Philipsen perfectly for the sprint. The victory not only boosted Philipsen's morale but also brought renewed belief in his team for the remaining stages of the Tour de France 2026.
