Seth Meyers Focuses on Trump’s Claims and Policies

Last night, Seth Meyers focused on Donald Trump’s claims that China swayed the 2020 election, new tariffs on Canadian imports and his attempt to impose voting restrictions.

Meyers On Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host reacted to reports that Trump’s approval ratings in his second term are the worst of any 21st-century president, scoring lower than Barack Obama and George W Bush. “Trump is doing worse than Bush during the Iraq war – and remember, Bush had a pair of shoes thrown at him,” Meyers said. “That was the moment you could tell Bush played baseball. He reacted to [dodging] that first shoe like, ‘That’s inside.’ “Trump, on the other hand, has zero agility. If someone threw a shoe at him, he’d still have a mark. And the sole of the shoe would be a mess! Or just perfectly painted.” Meyers pointed out that Trump is unpopular with people with no party affiliation as well as those on the left.

According to a Washington Post poll, he is scoring worse with independents than Richard Nixon during Watergate. Reacting to a CNN host who called the numbers “quite troubling,” Meyers laughed: “Quite troubling? I would say that’s a real fucking understatement.”

In a speech last week, Trump accused China of illegally acquiring 220 million US voter files in a pattern dating back to the 2020 election. “This happened in 2020, you say?” asked Meyers. “Man, whoever was president back then must feel like an idiot right now.” “Also – I’ve never asked this of a president before – are you drunk, bro? You sound like you’re 10 beers deep at a frat party complaining about your girlfriend’s besties.”

While Trump continues to insist that the 2020 election was rigged, Meyers pointed out that much of the voter data that he says China stole is in the public domain or available to be legally purchased from states for a small fee. “Yeah, of course you can – you can buy anything online,” said Meyers. “And by the way, not only is all that information already public, but Trump’s own team of cranks and nutjobs admitted after the speech there was still no proof of widespread election fraud.”

This week Trump also announced plans for steep tariffs on Canadian imports with up to 50% fees on goods including cement. “Hockey sticks?” asked Meyers. “So you’re just a total dick. You might as well slap a tariff on Molson, maple syrup and the concept of apologizing. That is such an insult to Canada.”

Trump is also demanding that Congress pass a law that would require voters to show their passport or birth certificate at polling stations, in a move that would disenfranchise millions of people. “Who the hell knows where their birth certificate is?” asked Meyers. “I’m guessing mine’s in a manila folder somewhere between takeout menus and photos of my brother.”
