Escalating Violence in the West Bank

Your report (How children in West Bank are being killed by Israel ‘without accountability’, 29 June) resonated deeply. As the chief executive of Unicef UK, I have just returned from meeting Palestinian families and children across the West Bank – many of whom carried Unicef backpacks just like Mohammad al-Halaq in your report – who spoke of the rising fear and violence that have become part of their daily lives. I have worked in humanitarian development for more than two decades, but nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed there.

In Hebron’s militarised H2 area, movement is heavily restricted, children must pass checkpoints to get to school, and their usual route is permanently closed. This restricts access to education, which is a fundamental right. A group of mothers I met described routine humiliation and intimidation. They recounted how Israeli forces often conduct arbitrary searches and use excessive force, which contributes to the pervasive sense of fear among local residents.

Urgent Need to Protect Palestinian Children Amid Escalating Violence

The streets were empty, people afraid to be outside due to the potential for violence. On one tragic occasion just days before my visit, a seven-month-old infant boy died after being shot by Israeli forces while sitting on his mother’s lap in the back of their car. The child had not yet had the chance to take his first steps and his death was a profound reminder of the devastating impact of this violence.

These incidents are not isolated; since January 2025, at least one Palestinian child has been killed on average every week in the West Bank. For nine-year-old Mohammad, and the many other children who have lost their lives as part of escalating violence, there must be global outrage and condemnation. We cannot allow this to become normalized.

Unicef calls on the Israeli authorities to take immediate and decisive action to protect Palestinian children in line with international law. The actions taken by these authorities are crucial not only for the immediate safety of children but also to uphold their rights and dignity. Additionally, Unicef urges UN member states with influence to use their leverage to ensure that Palestinian children are protected and that international law is respected.

The situation demands urgent attention from both national and international bodies to safeguard the rights of Palestinian children. The global community must act in solidarity to ensure that these vulnerable individuals are not forgotten or overlooked in this ongoing conflict. The impact on their lives cannot be overstated, as each child’s well-being is intrinsically linked to the peace and stability of the region.

Dr Philip Goodwin, Unicef UK's chief executive, has emphasized the need for global action. His call for immediate and decisive measures highlights the urgency of the situation and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing this humanitarian crisis. The continued loss of life among Palestinian children is a stark reminder that more must be done to protect them.
