Whistleblowers Accuse Kennedy Center of Rushed Renovations to Accommodate Trump Events
- Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has sent a letter detailing whistleblower claims that renovations at the Kennedy Center were rushed and federal contracting laws were ignored.
- The alleged issues include rusting columns, uneven paintwork, and unnecessary demolition of new bathroom floors.
- Whitehouse argues that these actions are indicative of subservience to Trump's aesthetic whims rather than addressing actual needs.
- Kennedy Center officials have denied the allegations, claiming rigorous financial oversight and adherence to established standards.
Whistleblowers' Claims
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democratic senator from Rhode Island, has sent a letter to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts detailing allegations that some renovations were 'rushed' and federal contracting laws 'were ignored' to get the center ready for events.
The senator stated in his letter dated Thursday that he received a whistleblower disclosure from the Government Accountability Project. The disclosure purportedly includes firsthand accounts from multiple former Center project managers, supported by contemporaneous documents and photographs. These claims suggest that renovations were driven more by personal preferences than necessary maintenance or improvements.

Specifically, Whitehouse highlighted several allegations in his letter:
- A cosmetic and rushed revamp of the Center’s Reflecting Pool is already rusting and peeling, and may need to be fully rebuilt. The renovations are described as a 'sharply at odds with both the procurement standards the Center has long applied and the representations it has made to Congress.'
- Trump's preferred contractor allegedly cut corners when repainting the Center’s columns, sticking taxpayers with the repair bill.
- An $8 million no-bid flooring contract went to a firm with no apparent concert-hall experience. The letter states that this was done 'to facilitate the rushed renovations.'
The Kennedy Center has strongly denied the allegations. Roma Daravi, a spokesperson for the center, stated that it operates under rigorous financial oversight and rejected the claim that contracting standards were bypassed.
The White House also disputed the claims, accusing previous leadership of neglecting the center. In a statement to the New York Times, Daravi said, “As America’s cultural center, the institution makes every decision guided by responsible stewardship and an unwavering commitment to its patrons and the nation it proudly serves. We remain fully committed to transparency and to delivering the critical improvements that will preserve this institution for generations to come.”
The letter comes after Trump secured $257 million from Congress for repairs and restoration at the Kennedy Center last year. Representative Rick Larsen, the senior Democrat on the House infrastructure committee, expressed concern about the allegations, urging the Board of Trustees to address these claims and ensure that funds are used appropriately.
In a statement issued Saturday, Larsen said, “The Kennedy Center whistleblower allegations are serious and concerning.”
