Rescue During Golf Tryouts

A group of Virginia teenagers, including Andrew Tuggle and 17-year-olds Gavin Cain and Jackson Castro, demonstrated exceptional bravery during their golf team tryouts on July 27. The trio was participating in the Eastern View high school’s golf team when they heard screams coming from Culpeper Lake adjacent to the course.

Heroic Actions at Culpeper Lake

Nearby, a family of three – including a young child who couldn’t swim – were struggling after their kayaks capsized. Tuggle and his teammates quickly realized the severity of the situation as one adult attempted to keep the child above water, but was having difficulty due to exhaustion.

While golfing teammates called for emergency help, Tuggle, Cain, and Castro immediately left the course. They ran down a steep, boulder-strewn shoreline that was covered in thorny bushes before jumping into the lake. With their quick response, the teens managed to bring all three individuals back to safety just as first responders arrived on scene.

Aftermath of the Rescue

No one was injured during the rescue operation. The Culpeper police department praised Tuggle, Cain, and Castro for their courage and leadership, stating that “these young men saw someone in danger and acted immediately, without hesitation, at potentially great personal risk to themselves.” Police chief Chris Settle expressed pride in seeing such leadership from local youth.

Following the rescue, the golf team was scheduled to resume practice. However, due to their wet clothes, the teens were sent home to change before returning to complete the tryouts 20 minutes later. Their determination and quick thinking paid off as they earned spots on the Eastern View golf team in time for the upcoming season’s first tournament.

The incident at the golf tryouts serves as a powerful reminder of what young people are capable of when faced with emergencies. Coach Patrick Thornhill commended the teens, saying their actions were “heroic” and hoped that they would inspire others to act quickly and bravely in similar situations.
