Rory McIlroy started his round at the Open Championship with a bang. As he teed off on the 414-yard par-four 9th hole, the world No. 2 executed a powerful drive that covered an impressive 403 yards and left him just 11 feet from the cup. 'Sometimes opportunities present themselves and you have to take them,' McIlroy remarked, admitting he had initially planned for a less aggressive approach.

However, despite his stellar driving performance, McIlroy's subsequent play faltered on the greens. He missed several birdie chances of between 10 and 20 feet, settling for a solid round of 67, which was three under par. This left him at one under going into day three, facing questions about what might have been.

Analysis of McIlroy's Performance

While McIlroy's driving was undoubtedly impressive, his irons were less precise. His overall game plan remained intact, but the execution fell short in several key moments. 'I felt like I left a couple out there,' he said. 'Then you look at the board and see a couple of 62s, and you feel like you could have done a bit better.'

McIlroy acknowledged that the challenge lies in adapting to Birkdale's unique greens, which have been causing him discomfort. He turned to putting guru Brad Faxon for advice but admitted there is still work to be done. 'I’m still trying to figure out these greens a little bit,' he said. 'It was a little better today, but still didn’t feel 100% comfortable.'

McIlroy's Outlook and Challenges Ahead

Despite his current position in the field, McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances for the rest of the tournament. 'There’s a couple of guys up there who will be sort of their first experience of playing in the lead at a major championship on the weekend,' he said. 'If I can get off to a decent start tomorrow and be four or five under for the tournament, I’ll be right in it.'

McIlroy's performance this round provides a mix of hope and concern. While his driving has been a standout feature, his putting remains an area that needs improvement if he is to secure his place among the leaders on moving day.
