- Datacentre projects are being challenged or cancelled due to energy demands and local opposition.
- Large-scale AI projects require significant datacentre capacity, which is lagging behind demand.
- Energy constraints pose a major hurdle for the construction of mega-gigawatt datacentres.
Obstacles to Datacentre Expansion
Datacentre projects around the world are encountering various obstacles that threaten their completion. These include energy supply issues, high costs, and local opposition as seen in the case of a project in Virginia.
AI's Hunger for Datacentres

As artificial intelligence (AI) models continue to advance rapidly, there is an urgent need for datacentres to support their operations. However, large-scale datacentre projects are being delayed or scrapped due to energy shortages and other challenges.
Energy Constraints and Mega-Gigawatt Projects
Datacentre projects are facing significant hurdles as the global demand for electricity is expected to rise rapidly over the next five years. The Uptime Institute, which inspects and rates datacentres, has identified 250 global datacentre projects exceeding 100MW in energy demand – equivalent to around 300,000 homes – that have been announced between 2021 and 2024.
