Key points:
  • OpenAI does not appear to have visited one of Stargate UK's key sites.
  • The £20bn investment touted by the UK government for Stargate UK appears hypothetical.
  • Sources suggest the project was more of a PR stunt than actual development.
  • Government claims about potential investments are questioned by local leaders and critics.

Key Details of the Stargate UK Project

The Stargate UK datacentre project, which was to be a significant component in the US-UK technology partnership, has faced numerous questions. The project was announced with great fanfare during former President Donald Trump’s visit to London last year, but key details of its development have now come under scrutiny.

The ambitions of Stargate UK were modest in comparison to similar projects. The project was announced with great fanfare during former President Donald Trump’s visit to London last year, but key details of its development have now come under scrutiny. OpenAI, Nscale, and Nvidia were supposed to collaborate on developing infrastructure across Britain, including a prominent datacentre at Cobalt Park.

Local leaders in North Tyneside expressed surprise when the project was announced. John Johnsson, leader of the Conservatives in North Tyneside, said: 'When it was announced, we were really, really taken aback. We were surprised because we weren’t made aware of any of these discussions.' He added that the project seemed too good to be true and raised doubts about its feasibility.

Government Response and Future Outlook

In response to these concerns, the government stated: 'The government is determined to create the right conditions for investment in the UK’s AI and datacentre infrastructure, with work now well under way in the north-east.' A spokesperson highlighted that a dedicated taskforce is driving forward planning, investment, and skills development.

Despite these efforts, local leaders remain skeptical. John Johnsson concluded: 'It's really disappointing. The fundamentals, energy costs, grid capacity and infrastructure do not appear to have been in place to support a project of this scale.'
